David & Grethe Welcome you to Haltwhistle's most historic building

The oldest part was a Border Reivers' Pele Tower, dating from the 15th Century. Later it became a Manor House, Excise Office, Coaching Inn, Post Office, Temperance Hotel, Pub and Cafe.

In 1997 we completely refurbished the building, finding many archaeological and architectural features - many of which have been included in the presentation of the reborn Hotel.

These ancient features have been imaginatively combined with an interior design aimed at giving a light, airy and homely feeling. We have installed very effective insulation, ventilation and heating systems using modern energy conservation techniques, giving an ideal indoor environment.

Comfort & Tradition

There are 9 bedrooms, all individually designed with original architecturural features maintained and with private bathrooms. They are equipped with TV, radio, direct dial telephones, hospitality trays and hair dryers.

There are 5 bedrooms in the original Hotel - three on the first floor with a cosy lounge - ideal for parties of 6.

On the second floor there are two bedrooms - one of them - the Baron’s Suite - providing extra space and comfort for the longer or VIP stay. In 1999 we added 4 new bedrooms in the courtyard - innovatively designed on two levels, they are very popular with business people and families alike. We have a secure car park at the rear of the hotel with direct access to the rear entrance.

ART AT THE CENTRE OF BRITAIN All over the Hotel are examples of original art, some our own collection, most the work of talented artists whose work we are pleased to exhibit. The Hotel provides the permanent base for our resident artist John Taylor - whose latent talent was only discovered by accident. Now he is commissioned to draw and paint all over the World.

Our unique location at THE CENTRE OF BRITAIN means we are ideally situated to visit, from one base, Hadrian's Wall, The Lake District, Kielder Water, The Borders, the Northumberland Coast, the North Pennines, Durham and the MetroCentre. Or, if you are organising a meeting, conference, exhibition, party - or just meeting up with friends - we are easily accessible from a wide area - a natural meeting point at THE CENTRE OF BRITAIN. We look forward to welcoming you to THE CENTRE OF BRITAIN.
